Scoring rules

How Datatrap turns answers into dimension scores, archetypes, and feedback bands.

A blueprint defines dimensions and result profiles. The assessment's questions map to dimensions, which receive contributions from scorable answers.

Dimension scores

Datatrap first converts each numeric answer to a common scale from 0 to 1, so answers on different scales can be combined. Reverse scoring flips that value, so a high answer counts as low. The weight next to each mapped dimension sets how much the answer counts towards that dimension. The dimension then reports its score on its own scale.

To make a question count for more or less, change its weight next to the dimension, under Scoring and dimensions in the Builder. Check a few sample results after changing a weight.

Question-specific behaviour

  • Rating scales, Likert scales with a recognised scale type, sliders, NPS, and matrices produce numeric scores.
  • Multiple choice and image choice need a configured correct answer to produce a correctness-based numeric contribution.
  • Ranking scores individual mapped options by their position. A whole-question mapping does not substitute for option mappings.
  • Open text, dates, forced choice, and multi-select do not produce numeric scores.

A missing or unscorable answer is not automatically a zero. Check the selected question type and mappings if a dimension is absent.

Archetypes and feedback bands

Archetypes need matching rules; writing a profile description alone does not assign it. Required rules must pass, and at least one rule must match. Where several archetypes match, the number of matching rules and configured order determine the selected profile.

Result feedback bands on an assessment's Feedback tab are separate from blueprint archetypes. See Configure result feedback.

Quizzes and 360s

Quiz analytics use the answers you marked as correct and an optional pass mark. You set the pass mark through the API, as a percentage from 0 to 100; the Console has no setting for it.

A 360 averages raters' scores for each rater group and dimension, leaves out anonymous groups that are too small, and compares self-ratings with others' ratings. It combines scores differently from an ordinary assessment, so check a sample 360 report rather than assuming every scoring setting has the same effect.
